Let me Sleep !!

This post is inspired from all of my experience. Getting sleep and staying asleep can feel like a never ending experiment, to say the least.

This article will be ever changing and be more and more refined as I find and try new information, advice and tricks. This is to ultimately give you and the children sufficient sleep. I'm not an medical expert so if are having abnormal sleep patterns seek medical help.

TIP 1.  GET TO A GOOD START

What I mean by this is that it’s important to have well stimulated and nutritious day to have sufficient and beneficial sleep. Question how do you feel after a lazy day eating nothing but crisps, biscuits and other snacks? Do you sleep well that night or are you tossing and turning, scrolling on your phone hoping that will send you asleep? I think it fair to say we don’t always sleep well on those days.

Let’s flip it then. How do you feel after a good day at work you come home have a filling dinner? And how is your sleep that night? If we sleep better on days like this so do our children.

We’ve all heard the term sleep promotes growth. Therefore their little brains need new information to process in the day and in their sleep to then keep growing.

TIP 2. TEMPERATURE

Depending what country you live in they all have different laws and guidance of “safe sleep temperatures” I’m going to pause another question that you how do you sleep with layers on, a think quilt and with the central heating on? For me personally I’m already feeling stressed thinking about it. We don’t like feeling hot and so don’t children. Try to keep it minimal and moderate cool.

I say this because when we feel tired our body temperature naturally drops a little. So when trying to settle our children to sleep we need it to be moderately cool this is because children mainly under the age of 3 years old don’t quite yet regulate their body temperatures.

TIP 3. BEDTIME ROUTINE

The reason for having a good bedtime routine isn’t just to help the body calm down and relax the mind ready for sleep. The true reason for a clear and consistent bedtime routines, or nap time routine if they are still napping, is so the brain associates certain actions and sequences of events with sleep. Think of it like this

You go to the supermarket, you buy food for a meal in mind. You come home and prepare the food. How are you feeling now? Hungry? Ready to eat? When the meal has finished being cooked and plated up you eat. Your brain was preparing the body to eat and enjoy.

No bedtime routine will be the same but you definitely need something simple and consistent. Consistency is definitely the key. I’m going to list some suggestions but you can certainly tailor it for your family

  1. Choose pyjamas, Dimmed lights and bath, bedtime story, lights off kisses and cuddles. Sleep time.
  2. Oat biscuit with milk, choose pyjamas, clean teeth and face, bedtime story, lights off. Sleep time.
  3. Bath, bottle(milk/warm juice), bedtime story/ song/ talk about the day. Lights off. Sleep Time.
I bet now you’re thinking. What if they keep waking up??

TIP 4. FIRM BUT ADAPTABLE
